43Residence ProjectDRAWDuring my stay in Akiyoshidai, I was only immersedin nature's endless repetition of life and death.Mountains and trees, caves and stones, night andday. Time did not seem to flow. It just seemed to berepeating itself every day. 'Yamayaki', the process ofburning dried grass to make the sprout grow well inspring, seemed to explain the relationship betweenthe ever recurring life and death. The obvious truth,that life and death, good and bad, exist together,came to me afresh in those moments.A pattern of "Go" named "Chosei(長生)" popped upinto my mind. Chosei refers to a very special formwhich occurs very rarely. "The eternally alive shape"as it literally means, is the case which arises when thesame form is repeated endlessly and the two sides failto yield to each other, and the game ends up with adraw. There is no winner or loser. Chosei is so rare thatit is difficult to catch a sight of it. Chosei has officiallybeen recorded only thrice in history,first time in 1993 (Japan), second time in 2009 (Japan)and last time in 2013 (Korea). Chosei is known to beauspicious and a harbinger of good health to all thepeople who play Go when it comes up. However, Iwas reminded of 'the shape that is alive forever' and'the shape that is eternally dead' at the same time. Iflife and death were to be repeated forever,I thought it was also possible to be dead forever.In addition, I found out that Yamaguchi Prefecture hasa lot of coalmines. Amongst those, I was interested inthe coal mine 'Chosei(長生)' in Ube located undersea,and inquired into it.In year 1942 on 3rd of February,there was an accident at this coal mine ,the minecollapsed and the workers inside it were submergedinto the sea. The irony lies in the fact that the nameof the coal mine was 'Chosei(長生)', and the remainsof 47 Japanese and 136 Korean forced laborers stillremain intact under the sea.Here 'Chosei(長生)' appears. Life and death arerepeated forever. There are no winners and no losers.I just hope that everyone, whether they are aliveforever or dead forever, will be blessed.滞在制作プロジェクト引き分け　私は、ここ秋吉台に滞在し、生と死が延々と繰り返されている自然の姿に没頭した。山の木、洞窟や石、夜と昼。時は流れているようには見えることなく、ただ毎日が繰り返しのように感じられた。春に新芽がよく育つようにするため乾いた草を燃やす山焼きは、繰り返される生と死の関係を説明してくれているように見えた。生あれば、死もあり、良いことがあれば悪いこともあるという当たり前の事実が改めて押し寄せてきた瞬間だった。　私はいつか聞いた「長生」という囲碁のパターンを思い出した。「長生」は、非常にまれに生じる特殊な形を指す言葉だ。「永遠に生きている形」という意味で、同じ形が終わることなく繰り返され、双方が互いに譲らず持ちこたえる場合、引き分けになってしまうのである。勝者も敗者もないのである。長生はとても珍しく目撃するのが難しい。公式記録での長生は、1993年（日本）、2009 年（日本）、2013 年（韓国）の計三回のみだ。長生の出現は囲碁をするすべて人々に健康をもたらす縁起の良い兆候として知られている。しかし私は「永遠に生きている形」と同時に「永遠に死んでいる様子」を思い浮かべた。生と死が延々とめぐるものであるなら「長生」という形は「永遠に死んでいる様子」とも捉え得ると思ったのだ。　他方で、山口県に炭鉱が多いことを知り、その中でも宇部市にある「長生」という海底炭鉱に関心を持って調査した。1942 年2 月3 日。炭鉱が崩落し、中にいた人たちが一瞬にして水没した事故があった。皮肉なのは炭鉱の名前が「長生」だったという点と、まだ海底には日本人47 人と強制徴用朝鮮人136 人の遺体が収拾されずに残っているという点である。　ここに「長生」が現れた。生と死は永遠に繰り返される。勝者はなく、敗者もない。永遠に生きていて、永遠に死んでいる、すべての者に、私は祈りを捧げたい。
