5ForewordA k i y o s h i d a i I n t e r n a t i o n a l A r t V i l l a g ecommenced in 1998 as an institution to supporta wide range of artistic practice includingmusic, art, dance, and film. The Artist-in-Residence program aims to foster young artists,and what is notable is that through opencall and recommendation from our partnerorganizations, we have accepted over 170emerging artists who are in their 20's and 30'sfrom all over the world and these artists stayedand worked on a variety of unique artisticactivities.In fiscal year 2016, AIAV has hosted 6 artistsfrom Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Finland, andthe Netherlands, they worked on their projectsbased on the given theme, “The Future of ThisLand" over 55 days of their stay. In fact, untillast year, we set a theme which was relativelyeasy to imagine “The Features of This Land” .However, since the theme became open andfree to consider in this year, I assume that theseartists had hard time to work on it. In any case, itis intriguing to see how their art works becomerealized and to see how they felt and captured“the future” of this land. We hope many of ouraudience to view their works.The Artist-in-Residence program at AIAV is along lasting program since the inauguration ofAIAV approximately 20 years ago and has beenrecognized as “a pioneering institution for anArtist-in-Residence program" in the art field. Weshould not stay satisfied with this recognitionbut we disseminate our program and outcometo the world and will continue to concentrateour effort on revitalizing the region.
