A contrbuting text by Sachiko Kanno秋吉台国際芸術村アーティスト・イン・レジデンスの軌跡菅野幸子 (AIR Lab)アーツ・プランナー / リサーチャーAkiyoshidai International Art Village (hereinafterreferred to as “AIAV”) has continued to offer itsdiverse activities for local residents ranging fromworkshops to concerts, leaving solid footprintsas a platform for regional artistic activities. It hasalready been 20 years have passed since itsopening in 1998.From the beginning of its establishment, AIAV setup Artist in Residence (hereinafter referred to as“AIR”) program as its core program and has steadilybuilt its achievements since then. The AIR programinvites emerging national and international artistsin and out of Japan and offers them opportunitiesto focus on their artistic practices in a differentcultural environment. These artists can pursuetheir artistic expressions but also can engage inrich culture, nature, and history of Yamaguchi andinteract with local residents. This is a distinctivecharacteristic of the AIAV AIR program, and theinteraction with local residents can actually havea great impact on works created by the residentartists. Especially in the past few years, AIAV haspresented themes such as “The Feature of ThisLand” and “The Future of This Land” to theseselected artists and had them work on projectswith a focus on the locality of Akiyoshidai andYamaguchi. Each artist employs various methodsof diverse expressions such as visual arts, film,photography, performing arts, dance, music, andinstallation and concentrates on the given themeto create brilliant artworks.The history of the AIR program in Japan is not solong. Gradually becoming prevalent all over Japanfrom the 1990s, there are currently more than 60locations offering AIR programs in Japan. Recently,there are some organizations that started by artistsand artists collective who had experienced the秋吉台国際芸術村（以下、「AIAV」）は、地域の方々を対象としたワークショップからコンサートの開催までと多彩な活動を続けてきて、地域のアート活動の拠点として確かな足跡を残してきている。1998年の開館から早くも20年を数えるとは時のたつのは早いものである。AIAVは、開館当初からアーティスト・イン・レジデンス・プログラム（以下、「AIR」）を事業の中核に据え、着実に実績を重ねてきている。AIRプログラムは、内外から新進気鋭のアーティストを招き、異なる文化背景の中で創作活動に専念してもらう活動であるが、アーティストたちは自分たちの表現を追求するだけでなく、AIAVに一定期間滞在することにより、山口の豊かな文化や自然、歴史に親しみ、そして地域と人々と交流を通じて、人々の生活に触れる。これはAIRというプログラムの大きな特徴であり、滞在する地域の方々との交流は作品にも大きな影響を与えることもある。特に、この数年は、招へいアーティストに対しては、AIAVに滞在する間の活動に対して「この土地の魅力」、「この土地の未来」といったテーマを提示して、秋吉台や山口にこだわった作品を創作してもらっている。いずれのアーティストも、ビジュアル・アーツ、映像、写真、パフォーマンス、ダンス、音楽、インスタレーション、それぞれ手法も表現方法も異なるが、真摯にテーマに取り組み、素晴らしい作品を生み出している。日本におけるAIRの歴史はそう長くはない。1990年代始めから徐々に全国に広まっていき、現在では、日本各地60ケ所以上でAIR事業が実施されている。最近では、海外でAIRを体験したアーティストも小規模ながら受け入れ始めたりしており、正確な数が把握できないほど増えてきている。このような日本のAIRの状況の中にあって、AIAVのAIRは日本のAIRの嚆矢の一つであり、日本のAIRの定評を海外に知らしめている団体としての実績を20年にわたり着実に築いてきている。海外のパTrace of AIAV Artist-in-Residence programsSachiko Kanno (AIR Lab)Art planner / researcher058
