“Return to the Future” Virtual Archive: Reconstructed Venue of “Prometeo” and Artist-in-Residence Exhibition “From the Distant Past to the Present”

Virtual Archive of Inherited Arts from AIAV

We are pleased to present the exhibition “Return to the Future”—held at AIAV from October 26 to November 4, 2024—as an online archive, now viewable in a 3D virtual space. This exhibition reflected on the journey of AIAV since its founding in 1998, while contemplating its future.
In the concert hall, we reconstructed the venue for Prometeo, the inaugural performance that celebrated the opening of the facility. In the gallery, we showcased the history of our AiR program alongside current voices of participating artists.
Please enjoy exploring the virtual exhibition space as if you were freely walking through the venue in person.

Reconstructed Venue of “Prometeo”

On August 25, 1998, Akiyoshidai International Art Village opened its doors to the public. The following day, Luigi Nono’s Prometeo was performed for the first time in Japan.

The concert hall was designed by renowned architect Arata Isozaki specifically to provide the ideal acoustic and spatial environment for Prometeo. Conceived as an “archipelago” of sound, the hall features a unique layout in which approximately 80 performers are positioned in separate groups across different floors and locations.

As part of the exhibition “Return to the Future”, we have reconstructed the original spatial configuration of Prometeo. Visitors are invited to explore a dedicated space crafted exclusively for Prometeo.

Artist-in-Residence Exhibition “From the Distant Past to the Present”

Since its opening in 1998, AIAV has welcomed and supported the creative activities of both domestic and international artists though it’s Artist-in-Residence program.

The AiR Exhibition “From the Distant Past to the Present” introduces each year’s resident artists, along with documents, reports, and exhibition archives. It also features newly submitted materials from 62 past participants, including documentation od their creative processes, past works and updates on their current activities.

Looking back at the past while engaging with the present work of these artists offers a deeply meaningful experience. We hope these materials and records will allow you to trace the diverse paths the artists have taken over time.
